At Painted Brain, we love to step outside of the center to appreciate and get inspired by the amazing museums and galleries Los Angeles has to offer. Last week, 10 of us from the community center went to MOCA on Grand for the Henry Taylor exhibit. Henry Taylor is a Los Angeles painter and artist known for his acrylic paintings, mixed media, and installations. He worked as a psychiatric technician at Camarillo State Mental Hospital for 10 years, retired and got his BFA at California Institute for the Arts. His biggest output of art is portraiture so before walking around the expansive exhibit, we set an intention to find a favorite portrait and take a picture. We were guided to contemplate who that person was, where they were at in their life, what they were going through. We were also instructed to pay attention to the style of painting – noticing the shapes of peoples features and the different brush strokes applied. The exhibit blew all of our minds – with the amount of art that was held and the cultural and political messaging produced. Afterwards, we gathered around a table in the family room of the museum to discuss our thoughts and impressions. Everyone shared what they got out of the exhibit, what their favorite piece was and how it inspired them. Then we used the picture of the portrait we liked the most and did our own sketch of it with colored pencils. All in all, it was a lovely experience for the community members and we look forward to offering more events like this in the future.
